An American chess grandmaster and the eleventh World Chess Champion.
He captured the World Chess Championship from Boris Spassky (USSR) which attracted wordlwide interest as a Cold War confrontation.
Bobby was arrested in Japan and held for several months for using a revoked USA passport. After that he was granted an Icelandic citizenship and lived there until his death in 2008.
Among Fischer’s contributions to chess are a modified chess timing system that added a time increment after each move and Fischerandom, a new variant of chess known today as “Chess960”.
