Animals are being mistreated all over the world so this means we should have a Bill of Rights for animals. Without a Bill of Rights animals are defenseless against the ones who pose threats. If the Bill of Rights for animals gets passed that will show people that we truly care about how animals are being treated. Animals deserve the right to be free from explosion, cruelty, neglect and abuse. The right of laboratory animals not to be used in cruel or unnecessary experiments. The right of farm animals to an environment that satisfies their basic physical and psychological needs. The right of companion animals to a healthy diet, protective shelter, and adequate medical care. The right of wildlife to a natural habitat, ecologically sufficient to a normal existence and self-sustaining species population, and the right of animals to have their interests represented in court and safeguarded by the law of the land. Each year, more than 100 million animals including mice, rats, frogs, dogs, cats, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, monkeys, fish, and birds are killed in the U.S. laboratories for biology lessons, medical training, curiosity-driven experimentation, and chemical, drug, food, and cosmetics testing.
Animals are being used for cruel or unnecessary experiments. In the ProCon.org article it states that “animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force feeding, forced inhalation, food and water deprivation and prolonged periods of physical restraint. The infliction of burns and other wounds to study the healing process, the infliction of pain to study its effects and remedies, and killing by carbon dioxide asphyxiation, neck breaking, decapitation, or other means”(Procon.org). The essence of this argument is that it shows pathos because animals can sense the five senses that humans have such as sight, smell, hearing, tasting and touching. Even though humans and animals have different structures animals are still capable of doing things that they are told like for example they know how to eat, sleep, breathe, they can also feel pain. Animals are not being treated with respect because they abuse these animals for cures even though some will fail because the results are not transferable to humans. According to Rifkin “Researchers were stunned recently by findings (published in the journal Science) on the conceptual abilities of New Caledonian crows. In controlled experiments, scientists at Oxford University reported that two birds named Betty and Abel were given a choice between using two tools, one a straight wire, the other a hooked wire, to snag a piece of meat from inside a tube” (Rifkin pg 33). Basically, Rifkin is saying only the more intelligent animals get to eat. Animals do not have a choice on how they eat. Animals need to use their brains in order to eat.
Animals need to get out of captivity. In the Blackfish documentary it states that “the previous head trainer used techniques that involved punishment with two orcas. Tilikum, which was trained and another that was not. They sent both off to do the same behavior if Tilikum didn’t do it then both animals were punished. They would deprive food for the orcas to keep them hungry, this caused a lot of frustration with the larger anima. The established animal would in turn get frustrated with Tilikum and would rake Tilikum with his teeth. The female orcas would gang up on Tilikum. Tilikum was the one we trusted. We never were concerned about Tilikum (Blackfish). The female orcas should not have been kept with Tilikum because they did not know how Tilikum was gonna be like because they have never even seen a male orca in their lives and also he had acted way different than the female orcas. Humans cannot simply put orcas together and expect them to work together that is not how it works. Orcas need to be with their families instead of being separated. If you separate orcas from their families they will miss them and want to kill anything in sight. Animals are only dangerous if they are being aggravated or being harmed.
A perfect example from Rifkin of how animals have emotions just like humans is “the studies on pigs social behavior funded by McDonald’s at Purdue University have found that pigs crave affection and are easily depressed if isolated or denied playtime with each other. The lack of mental and physical stimulation can result in deterioration of health. In Germany the government is encouraging pig farmers to give each pig 20 seconds of human contact each day and to provide them with toys to prevent them from fighting (Rifkin pg 33). This shows us that pigs do not spend enough time together which animals need to spend time together because pigs experience both positive and negative emotions and can feel happiness, sadness, grief and pain. Pigs are aware of their suffering and losses. Pigs are highly sensitive animals and can become quickly bored, anxious and depressed when confined to cramped spaces and mistreated. Giving your pig some buddies will help them with physical contact. Humans do not know how to bond with pigs because they are not like dogs. Humans bond with dogs by paying attention when they pet it. Humans spend quality one on one time together with their dogs. People do not know how to take care of pigs they think that they are just good for laying around in the mud all day.
