Did you know that the element neon originated from the Greek word “neos” meaning “new” or how we use it in our daily life? You probably don’t. In this research paper I will be informing my reader’s facts they should know about this element. Facts like common uses, where it is found, and the structure of the element. I decided to do research on this because it is what I am most interested in. Before doing this research I had no idea what neon obtained. Neon was discovered by Morris M. Travers, an English Chemist and Sir William Ramsay, an Scottish Chemist, shortly after Krypton was discovered in 1898. It is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas, belonging to the group called noble gases. Natural neon is a mixture of three stable isotopes: neon-20 (90.92%), neon-21 (0.26 %), and neon-22 (8.82%). Neon is the most gratifying element used. Without it we wouldn’t function as we do today. But it is very rare on Earth. Only 0.0018% of the earth’s atmosphere is neon in volume. 1 part in 65,000 is found in the earth’s atmosphere but in small amounts. Neon atoms have ten electrons. Two of these fit into the first energy shell. Neon is the 10th element of the periodic table with the symbol of Ne. It’s atomic number is 10. Neon has 10 protons, 10 neutrons, and 10 electrons. The atomic mass number is 20.1797. Neon is also used in high voltage combined with helium to make neon-helium lasers. For example, if you walk into a casino in las vegas and you see a logo bright lights. That substance happens to be a liquid neon used as cryogenic refrigeration. Neon is important because it is used for lighting, signs, lasers, and refrigeration. In conclusion, this shows how neon is a very important element because it helps light up our world. We wouldn’t have background light on our computers, we wouldn’t have lights that help us see at night. Even Las Vegas, Nevada would be a dim city without the help of our neon lights!
