computing is part of a larger architecture and concept. We have mentioned the
requirements and problems that prompt Fog Computing technology. The most
important goal was to provide real-time services for applicants. Apart from Fog
computing, there are other alternative Edge technologies. Mobile Edge Computing
and Cloudlets are two state-of-the-art edge architectures. In the following, we
are going to explain these edge technologies and express some of the
differences and the proper applications for each of them.

Computing was introduced by Cisco a few years ago. The main feature of Fog
Computing is the highly pervasive nature of Fog nodes which are spread out
between abstraction layer and Cloud/ Core systems. Fog layer can be the largest
layer (distance-based) of IoT ecosystem. Fog nodes are also heterogeneous. This
heterogeneity involves various aspects that feature such as size, processing
capability, architecture, communication technologies can be mentioned. As we
said before, the main services here are processing, storage, and communication
but, these are just the base services. Resource allocation, monitoring, and
security services are only examples of the various services that this
technology offers. Ubiquitous Fog nodes are really crucial for having a
fault-tolerant, maintainable and, reliable infrastructure. Fog computing
multi-layer architecture along with nodes distribution is really helpful and
crucial. Considering this feature, network architects can define and highlight
specific places for intended services. Each Fog nodes can provide separate
services. This can make service provisioning more efficient and accurate.

Mobile Edge Computing

Edge Computing (MEC) is also a concept in Edge Computing and it tries to
provide context-aware and near real-time services for devices within the RAN (Radio
Access Network). Here, the free movement of all devices is important and
considerable. Mobile Edge Computing entities (hosts and servers) are usually in
the vicinity of Radio Network Controller. This technology partially relies on
virtualization. Each server has numerous MEC hosts that provide computation and
storage services through virtual interfaces. Another important component of
this technology is Mobile Edge Orchestrator which monitors hosts and provides a
list of information about the services provided by each of the hosts. It also
checks the availability of resources and network topology while handling the
applicants. Mobile Edge Computing servers can provide information about network
status and offer connected devices information. Due to the mobile nature of
devices and proximity to applicants, Mobile Edge Computing supports a high
level of location awareness.

computing is a buzz word in Cloud Computing technology. Actually, Cloudlet is a
small-scale cloud datacenter and includes a set of trusted networked computers
which sit on edge of the network and provide various services for mobile
applicants. Cloudlets also use virtualization techniques for allocating
required services and resources for nearby devices. Due to being on the edge of
the network and offering single-hop services, Cloudlets have a good performance
in terms of QoS and especially lowering delays. The Cloudlet provision it
services based on a 3-layer architecture (Cloudlet, node, and component layer).
The component layer provides services and interfaces for Execution
Environments. These environments which operate on top of an operating system
form node. Here, node agent is responsible for management operations. Putting a
set of these nodes together creates Cloudlets which are managed by the Cloudlet
agent. Cloudlets can significantly reduce the workload of the Clouds.
