Health of our state’s economy and people is bound
to the health of our environment. Education for environmental literacy and
sustainability prepares students to understand and manage the complex
relationships impacting our communities, our state’s economy, and our natural
resources. This education contributes to overall academic achievement and
prepares students with the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to succeed
in today’s changing world. Education for environmental literacy and sustainability
provides the opportunity to connect with nature and develop the understandings
needed to be healthy adults, active citizens and environmentalist. Incorporation
of this education provides an established way to connection with outside knowledge
and environmental learning with the standards and benchmarks schools already
teach. This approach also adds local relevance to help students connect to the
places in which they live and learn. Innovations such as waste to energy and
bio-fuel production are examples of this economic revolution. Education for
environmental literacy and sustainability in schools and colleges offer contributions
where young people gain the critical thinking and problem solving skills they
will need to be successful in
this changing world. So that the curriculum itself have to plan these.  Establishing curricula coordinated across
disciplines to educate the next generation of responsible citizens and leaders
will also be a key goal of this initiative. A centerpiece of this strategy will
be the establishment of a center for energy, sustainability and environment to
provide leadership and coordination required to advance research and education
in these fields.  We can promote
the development, dissemination, implementation and evaluation of environmental
education programs among the students. Suggest field experiences as part of the
regular curriculum and create programs that contribute to healthy lifestyles
through out-of-doors activity and sound nutrition. Create opportunities for
enhanced preparation and ongoing professional development for teachers and
leaders by improving environmental and sustainability subject matter knowledge
and pedagogical skills in teaching about environmental issues and education for
sustainability, including the use of interdisciplinary, field-based, and
research-based learning, effective assessment practices, and innovative
technology in the classroom.
