Allow me to welcome you all to this seminar entitled “Data Privacy Act of the Philippines: Effects in the Delivery of Quality Health Care Services”. Privacy is considered to be an international fundamental human right and a rare gem in today’s world. So it has become imperative for us to protect it given its vulnerable nature.
Let us start with, what is Data Privacy? It is also called as information privacy, it is the aspect of information technology (IT) that deals with the ability of an organization or individual to determine what data in a computer system can be shared with third parties.

In 2012, the Philippines passed the Data Privacy Act 2012, it is the policy of the State to protect the fundamental human right of privacy, of communication while ensuring free flow of information to promote innovation and growth. The government recognizes the vital role of information and communications technology in nation-building and its inherent obligation to ensure that personal information in information and communication systems in the government and in the private sector are secured and protected.

This Act applies to the processing of all types of personal information and to any natural and juridical person involved in personal information processing including those personal information controllers and processors.

Most of us handle personal data at work, like clients/patients’ information, laboratory results, it is our responsibility to keep that information secure and ensure that individuals’ rights are respected.
The purpose of this seminar:
To educate us on the requirements to make us aware of our responsibilities and protection rights under the Act.
To identify the effects/impacts of this Act in the quality of health services, like, “how will it help the organizations to gain & strengthen customer trust, confidence & loyalty?”On this note, I am confident that today’s seminar will be fruitful and that, together, we will achieve a giant step towards enforcing this Act.
