In high school, we all learned that pi is about circles, well it is but not really. I’ll tell you why. Pi is the ratio of a circle’s circumference which is the distance around the circle, to its diameter the distance across the circle at its widest point. The ratio of pi is about 3.14, it also appears in formula’s such as the area inside the circle, A = ?r2, where ? the greek letter “pi” and r is the circle’s radius (the distance from center to rim). Pi is the 16th letter of the Greek alphabet, is used to represent the most widely known mathematical constant. I did a little research on where it’s from originally and I found it. According to Tuslaworld.com ,Pi has been known for 4,000 years and was discovered by ancient Babylonians. A tablet from somewhere between 1900-1680 B.C. found pi to be 3.125. The ancient Egyptians made a similar discovery, and the evidence was found by the Rhind Papyrus of 1650 B.C. In this document, the Egyptians calculated the area of a circle by a formula giving pi an approximate value of 3.1605. Pi is an irrational number, which means that it is a real number with non repeating decimal expansions. It cannot be represented with an integer ratio and goes on forever, otherwise known as the infinite decimal. There is no exact value for pi, because the number does not end. Many mathematicians and math fans are interested in calculating pi to as many digits as possible. I wanted to find out the use of Pi in our everyday life, so of course I did some researching on pi in our everyday basis. Pi is used for many different tasks in different professions in our everyday life in different aspects of design work, and partially for round objects. Engineers who design things like tires, piping and tubing, round gaskets and balls use pi every day at work. For example, to determine the amount of material needed to make a basketball, designers used pi to figure out the surface area of a sphere of the appropriate size. I also took it upon myself to do a project with my sister who is a math professor on Pi with the objects around me . Its shown below.
