Limiting the consumption of saturated fats
has been the main strategy recommended by health practitioners over the number
of past decades for the purpose of reducing the risk of atherosclerotic
coronary heart disease (CHD) and ischemic heart disease (IHD) (DiNicolantonio,
Lucan & O’Keefe, 2016; Hu, 2010). This implies that a decrease in the
consumption of saturated fats has consequently led to a rise in the daily
intake of refined carbohydrates (mainly in the form of added sugars) due to the
common dietary model promoting the replacement of saturated fats with complex
carbohydrates. However, changes in low-density lipoprotein (LDL), high-density
lipoprotein (HDL), and triglycerides due to the previously noted replacement
may increase the risk of CHD (DiNicolantonio et al., 2016). In fact, the
effects of the consumption of saturated fats on LDL and CHD risk cannot be
unanimous as various forms of compounds represent these fats. For instance,
some types of saturated fats “pose no risk for CHD” and may even be protective
(DiNicolantonio et al., 2016, p. 464).

            Recently, scientific research has
pointed out the role of added sugar in the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and
obesity, amongst other diseases and conditions. DiNicolantonio et al. (2016)
argue that the risk of death as a result of cardiovascular disease is increased
three-fold with a diet rich in added sugars. Furthermore, Lustig, Schmidt, and
Brindis (2012) suggest that an increase in non-communicable disease is
associated with sugar intake and that the impacts of sugar on the body are
comparable to the effects of alcohol.

The proposed paper will analyze the
effects of saturated fats and sugars on human health with respect to mortality,
CHD, IHD, and other non-communicable diseases. A scientific approach is used in
this paper to better understand the key drivers that are increasing the risk of
heart disease, as well as other types of diseases, and ultimately affecting the
overall mortality rates.
