Alabama LPC Requirements
I plan to reside and practice within the state of Alabama upon completion of my degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and become a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC). To obtain this level of licensure, the state of Alabama has many guidelines in place to assure accreditation. First and foremost, I would need to hold a master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution and have a minimum of 48 hours of coursework completed. There are 11 specific content areas that should be covered within these 48 hours which is included in my plan of study at the University of Alabama. Within practicum a completion of 100 hours and 40 hours of direct service are required as well as 600 hours and 240 direct hours within Internship. In Alabama I must first pass the National Counselor Examination for Licensure and Certification (NCE). If I successfully passed this exam, I may then continue to work towards completing 3000 hours of supervised experience within the field (2250 direct hours and 750 indirect service hours) under a Supervising Counselor. Once these requirements have been met, I can then proceed to becoming a LCP by obtaining a copy of the Administrative Code and Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice, which can be found on the Alabama Board of Examiners in Counseling website. Transcripts from the entirety of graduate training should be forwarded to the board for further review as well as three letters of recommendation from supervisors of clinical experience and someone who is familiar with my counseling skills. Once all of this has been successfully completed and my application fee has been submitted, I will then wait for board approval to sit for the Licensed Professional Counselor Exam in the state of Alabama.
