“Remember, Hope is a good thing, maybe the best of things, and no good thing ever dies.”
(The Shawshank Redemption)
The Shawshank Redemption is my all time favorite movie. It gives a strong message of hope, dreams, and friendship. The story begins when Andy, a banker by profession, convicted of the murder of his wife and her lover given two consecutive life sentences. Andy reached Shawshank prison in 1947. At that time another prisoner, Red, bet on him that he will cry among the new prisoners on the first night in the jail but Andy did remain quiet on his first night. Eventually, Andy and Red became friends. Andy kept himself busy in the jail but did not lose the faith in the dream of getting freedom. The first two years of Andy at Shawshank were worst. He was tortured and raped by other prisoners but eventually, things started changing. He began helping jail officers for their tax returns. He wrote letters to State office and got funds to expand the jail library. During the same time, a young man brought to the jail whom Andy taught how to read and write. That man disclosed that he knew the man who killed Andy’s wife. Andy talked to jail warden but warden refused to listen to him and gave him the punishment of two months isolation. That was the point when Andy decided to leave Shawshank. He dug a tunnel with a rock hammer and crawled through sewerage pipes of five football grounds lengths. Before leaving he asked Red to promise him to visit a place where he proposed his wife. When Red released he went to the place where he found a box containing money and Andy’s latter to meet him in Mexico. Red broke the payroll and left for the journey to meet his friend. The movie end when Red reached a beach and Andy greet him.
The story demonstrates the importance of hope in unfavorable conditions. It is the hope that takes you out of any situation. No matter how limited are the resources one has if one is persistent and works hard in the right direction he will ultimately achieve his goal. What I get from this move is a strong message of hope and friendship. Hardships come in life but they make us strong if we have faith and hope. Friendship makes us a better person and helping other keeps us motivated. Shawshank was a horrible jail, but real danger was its power to demoralize human spirit. Its walls and bars did keep prisoners not only physically but also their souls. It took people their identity and autonomy. There is only one thing that can save a person–hope. Hope is not just a dream, a denial to accept reality. True hope comes by actively dying to you. When you are willing to risk everything for a better life and a better world, freedom becomes possible.
