According to World Health Organization, tobacco use kills more than five million people every year more than HIV/AIDs, tuberculosis, and malaria combined. Almost everyone in the world comes in contact with smoke from a cigarette at least once in their life time, whether at their restaurant, road or at work. Smoking can have negative health, social and financial effects on the smoker, as will be discussed below.
The first and most direct harm that comes from smoking involves the body; smoking is known to be a route cause of various diseases. Effects of smoking not only impacts mom’s health, but also that of her baby whereby babies are born prematurely and/or with a low birth weight. Likewise, smoking causes lung cancer and heart disease by blocking and narrowing the arteries allowing less blood and oxygen to flow towards the heart. Furthermore, smoking also causes asthma making it difficult for air to move in and out of the lungs. Basing on the above effects, smoking is a serious disease which can lead to death if not controlled.
Other than the effect of smoking on the body, it is equally harmful in social life. A smoking habit can harm the smoker’s relationship with friends and family.
