The freedom it gives them to act just by sitting in front of a computer enthralls them, but this has a darker side that has gained the attention of teachers, and even eminent psychologists. One of the biggest problems is the identity crisis, constant social networking produces, which prove the negative effect on the students’ behavior.

    Within the course of thoughts, the present research paper is an attempt to investigate the negative effects of social media, that have caused potential harm to society . Students became victims of social networks more often than anyone else, this is because of the reasons that the learners are studying or looking for their course material online, they get attached to those sites to disturb the responsibility towards their tasks, diverting their attention from their work. This factor determines their success or failure in the education field.

 To this end, the main research question, guiding the present study is:

To what extent do the social media impact negatively on the students?    

  In order to have a reliable answer to the problem statement, three sub question can be derived as follows:

–         To what extent social media reduces learning and capabilities of the learners?

–         How the use of social networking effect inside classrooms?

–         What is the impact of social media on writing skills?

 

On the basis of the afore-stated questions, the following hypotheses can be sprung:

 

–         Social networking and web have reduced the learning and research capacities of students due to their easy use  .

–         Learners who get involved in activities on social media sites while studying, result in the reduction of their focus attention .This causes a reduction in their academic performance and concentration to study properly.

–         It is hypothesized that the students generally use slang words or shortened forms of words on social networking sites. They commence relying on the grammar computer and spelling check features. This reduces their command over the language and their creative writing skills.

 

To validate the above mentioned hypothesis, an experimental research work has been undertaken at Djelfa University , Department of foreign languages , involving a number of twenty five (25)  first year LMD students , including ten (10) teachers  enrolled in the section of English. The research instruments consisted of classrooms observation and questionnaire.

                      

The whole layout of the present dissertation is organized and structured into three chapters . The first chapter , entitled the globe of social media and its influences towards students in activities and tasks  defines social media and mainly description of factors that contributed on learners’ abilities .To follow up this study , the second chapter is concerned with some statistical data related to both teachers and students at the English Department. More importantly, the chapter focuses on the use of social media  at the first year LMD level. Thus, some important issues such as the internet  overuse , full- dependent on online tasks solutions and the reaction of the teacher towards the phenomenon  . To follow up this study, the bulk of third chapter is concerned with the practical side of the work that consists of data collection and analysis. As  result, the chapter represent  the analysis of  both teachers and students questionnaire. After that provide general results that have been founded in  analysis .later on, some given  recommendations  for both teacher’s and student’s in order to raise their awareness in social media effect .
