Students with a fixed mindset believe that their own intelligence and talent are innate traits that don’t change. While students with a growth mindset see mistakes as ways to learn and overcome challenges. In the Karate Kid, the movie shows a lot of growth and fixed mindset. The main character, Daniel LaRusso, shows both fixed and growth mindset. For example, when Miyagi, Daniel’s karate teacher, told Daniel to wash the car with a circular motion, sand the floor with a side to side motion, and paint the house and the fence with an up and down motion, Daniel thought that the chores he did was useless and that he wouldn’t learn anything from it. That is an example of a fixed mindset. An example of a growth mindset is that Daniel wanted to improve his karate so he can defeat Johnny in the tournament. Miyagi’s growth mindset was that he believes that Daniel could beat Johnny in the karate tournament. Johnny, the antagonist, and Daniel’s bully, had a fixed mindset throughout the whole movie because Johnny knows that he could beat Daniel in the tournament so he doesn’t improve.
In a fixed mindset point of view, people tend to document their intelligence and talent instead of improving or developing them. This happens to everyone and sometimes we don’t even realize it. Growing up as an Asian, you will have the mindset of being perfect or being smart. Having this fixed mindset sometimes affect people. For examples, if you did fail a test, you’ll probably think, “Oh I suck at this subject” and not study next time since you know the result that you’ll fail again. Having a fixed mindset is dangerous because it can affect our lives and can prevent important skill development and growth.
Growth mindset is way different from a fixed mindset. Growth mindset is the belief that you are in control of your own ability, and can be developed and improve. Having a growth mindset can widen your potential. Instead of avoiding a challenge, they overcome it and learn from feedback rather ignoring it. The harder you work and the more effort you put, the more you grow. For example, instead of saying, “I suck at math”, say “Math has been challenging to me”. If you want to have a growth mindset start to believe in yourself. If you don’t believe in yourself then you’ll won’t get anywhere in life with that negativity in your mind. That leads to another point. Think of positive things when you’re in a difficult situation. For example, if you are in a difficult situation, think, “It’s ok, you’ll get through this” or “breathe in and out”. Don’t say negative things in a bad situation, it will make it worse.
