research in question determines the kinds of research methodologies to be
chosen to support the work and methods chosen so as to collect data. In case
the research requires quantitative data, it requires the measurement of
variables and verification of the existing theories and hypotheses. Research
methodology refers to a way of finding out the results of the problem in
question regarding a particular problem or matter known as a research problem.
In research methodology, researchers apply different criteria to solve or
search for the research problem. In this regard, the term methodology refers to
the method used in searching or solving the research problem. In research
methodology, researchers usually try to search the research question
systematically in different ways to find out all possible answers until the
conclusion (Jha,
2008). In
this case, if the research fails to work systematically on solving the problem,
it would be impossible to find out a viable result or conclusion. More so, most
of the problems the researchers encounter can be resolved by choosing the
correct research methodology for the problem in question.

            Furthermore, research methodology
refers to the theoretical and systematic analysis of the methods used in a
research study. It includes the theoretical analysis of the different methods
and principles related to a branch of knowledge. Normally, it consists of
concepts such as theoretical model, paradigm, phases, as well as qualitative
and quantitative techniques (Jha,
2008). Regarding
the research on the effects of inflation on the performance of the stock
markets, different research methodologies can be used. It is, therefore, important
to identify the most appropriate methodology for this research so as to come up
with the most relevant findings, results, and conclusion.

Types of Research Methodologies

In research, two main types of
methodologies are used namely qualitative and quantitative methods.
Quantitative research method deals with quantification of things. It
encompasses questions like how many, the degree to which, or how long. In this
regard, quantitative methods aim at quantifying data and generalizing the
results from a chosen sample from a population of things. The quantitative
methods measure the incidence of different views as well as opinions in a
particular sample or aggregate results.
Qualitative methods deal with quality information, and they attempt to
acquire an understanding regarding the underlying reasons and motivations
leading to actions and establishment of how different people interpret the
world and experiences around them. They provide an insight into the problem
setting and generate ideas and hypotheses (Bryman, & Bell, 2015).

Quantitative Research Methodology

            Quantitative research methodology
refers to numerical representation and management of observations to describe
and explain the phenomena represented by those observations. More so,
quantitative research deals with empirical methods and statements. In this
regard, an empirical statement refers to a descriptive statement regarding what
is the case instead of what ought to be the case in the real world. Another
factor employed in quantitative research is empirical evaluation which is a
form that aims at determining the degree to which a particular policy or
program fulfills or fails to fulfill a certain norm or standard. There are
different types of quantitative research methodologies namely survey research,
experimental research, correlational research, and causal-comparative research
(Walter, & Andersen, 2013).

Quantitative Survey Research

This refers to asking questions to
respondents as a form of measurement procedures. This type of methodology is
flexible and can be used to gather both qualitative and quantitative
information about how the questions are structured and analyzed (Walter, & Andersen, 2013). More to the point, this
method is used to gather primary data from many sources to provide an answer to
the research question. Surveys collect data from organizations, community
residents, and businesses. In applied social research, surveys are one of the
most important measurement areas. When performing a survey, the researcher
needs to understand who he wants to survey, how to select the audience, how to
undertake the survey, how to ask the questions, and how to organize the tasks.
Under this method, various aspects should be put into consideration namely the
population, whether the population can be counted, language issues, and
geographical restrictions. For our research problem, this method can be used to
gather information from organizations listed in the stock market to understand
the numerical changes in the market performance during different inflation

Secondary Data Collation and

This method deals with the review of
existing information about a particular topic. In quantitative context, this
method involves manipulation of statistical data. Under this method, the
researcher cannot collect primary data since he cannot collect the data
directly from the source and cannot control this data (Walter, & Andersen, 2013).  However, the researcher can
acquire new insights via interpretation or presentation of the data. Thus, this
method mainly provides secondary data which can provide a starting point for
analysis or evaluation to acquire background understanding and knowledge
concerning a particular topic. The secondary data acquired contributes to the
analysis and explanation throughout the research process. When performing this
type of research, various factors need to be considered including official
statistics and other statistics. More so, researchers should consider the key
topics and issues that need to be handled and search for relevant information.
Furthermore, after collecting the information, the researchers read it and make
analysis, whereby they collate the information into key headings. The output
from this method includes data tables, statistics, and maps. For our research
question, this method can be used to gather secondary data concerning the
performance of the stock market in previous periods during different rates of

Statistical Analysis

This refers to a mathematical method
of cross-examining data by comparing and relating different sets of data. In
this regard, there are two types of statistics namely descriptive statistics
which involves numerical results of samples, and inferential statistics sourced
from population samples. More so, statistical analysis encompasses summarizing
and analyzing data to make it useful for decision-making. In this regard,
descriptive statistics is useful when summarizing some data into shorter forms
while inferential statistical analysis is applied when finding a relationship
to make a general conclusion or prediction. This method should only be used
when the researcher has a clear understanding of the reasons for using it (Walter, & Andersen, 2013). The researcher can only
acquire valuable findings when using statistical tests if he or she knows how
to interpret the results and use them in their research. The factors that need
to be considered when using this method include variables, inferences, as well
as confidence and significance. Regarding our topic of research, statistical
analysis can be applied to find the relationship between the rate of inflation
and the stock market performance and how the changes in inflation affect the
stock markets.

Qualitative Research Methods

            These methods are aimed at
evaluating social dimensions to provide rich and detailed results to offer
ideas and concepts to feed the research. These methods can provide information
regarding how people feel and think, but cannot estimate the number of people
feeling or thinking in a certain way. There are various types of qualitative
research methods as discussed below.

Social Survey/ Questionnaire

This is a research method based on
questionnaires that give rise to both quantitative and qualitative data. This
method is useful in gathering different types of information from a wide range
of respondents. This method collects rich, detailed qualitative data, and the
researcher needs to consider various factors such as the population, sampling
technique, format, questions to ask, and administration of the process. These
surveys can be performed in different ways such as via the phone, website,
email, post, or face-to-face (Flick,
2014). In the case of our research
question, this method can be used to gather information from managers of
companies listed on the stock exchanges or investors in stock markets.

Discussion Groups

Also known as focus groups, they
consist of some individuals invited to provide their views regarding a
particular topic in a discussion forum of between 6 to 12 people. This method
is mostly useful when in-depth information from different people is needed. The
information gathered from using this method is more varied as compared to one
provided by an individual during personal interviews or questionnaires.
Furthermore, this method is time effective in gathering data since it provides
in-depth information from different people simultaneously (Flick, 2014). In the case of our
research question, this method can be used to gather information regarding the
topic from different groups of people who acquired this information from
different sources. Other qualitative research methods include interviews,
workshops, observation, and visual techniques.

The Best Fit Methodology

The research problem in question is
about the effects of inflation on the performance of the stock markets. Mostly,
the type of results expected for this research is a comparison between the
changes in the rate of inflation and the performance of the stock markets. For
this reason, both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies can be
used. However, the best fit method is the qualitative research methods since
the expected output is mostly theoretical but not numerical. One of the reasons
for choosing this method is that it is flexible and allows the user to respond
to user data consequently during a session. More so, since the output expected
from this method is theoretical, the researcher can be able to find trends in
the available data and make some conclusions. Furthermore, this method allows
for the collection of detailed data that cannot be obtained from other methods.
More to the point, this method allows for the collection of first-hand data
which is more valuable as compared to other sources. Moreover, this method will
allow the researcher to find many sources regarding the topic and make
comparisons. This will result in more comprehensive results and conclusion.

When performing a research study, it
is important that the researcher understands both types of research
methodologies as well as the expected output from the study. With such
information, the researcher will be in a position to choose the most appropriate
method for different topics. In this regard, the best method to perform this
research is the qualitative research methodology.
